Sick teachers should not be forced to pay for their own substitutes!

I set up this petition after learning about a truly revolting case from San Francisco: a teacher that is battling breast cancer is forced to pay for her classroom's substitute teacher, all due to an antique law that dates back since 1976; the financial effort is staggering: $200 per day.
According to the law, public school teachers are not covered under the disability program of California and, to make matters worse, can ask for only 10 days of sick leave; the period can be prolonged to up to 100 days, but only if the substitute costs are handled by the teacher (i.e. deducted from his or her salary). Is this acceptable to you? I find it hard to believe the answer is YES.
We, the undersigned, believe that teachers are the most important profession on the planet and feel that they certainly deserve better treatment.
Urge the people in power in California to do the right thing and correct this outdated law so teachers who fall sick do not have this additional worry and are forced to pay out of their own pocket in case of this unexpected situation - it's not like they are going somewhere on vacation and they really want to skip classes, they are sick and thus unable to work!
