EU: Adopt law against modeling agencies who pressure models to lose weight!

The following story is from a dear friend of mine who has been trying to launch herself into the modelling industry. I was extremely distraught about this issue and decided to set up this campaign to denounce this ruthless business, whose leaders will stop at nothing to ensure the money keeps coming in; models are only valued as commodities and their wellbeing is not important at all.
When this friend of mine came to one of the biggest model agencies in the United Kingdom, she was tols she had ticked all the boxes except one – she needed to lose weight; she complies and lost about 2 inches off her hips; when she returned to the same agency, she was sent home and urged to lose even more weight. Her employers told her they were looking to hire models that were down to the bone skinny. She refused to continue.
However, many models that seek glory out there take this risk and accept such drastic measures. No models should be forced to appear underweight on a fashion podium, all in the name of good looks. It is a common practice for the industry to encourage eating disorders; for instance, models who take part in long photo shoots rarely have time for a good, healthy meal - the underlying message is always that you shouldn’t eat.
The agencies managing and recruiting models have a responsibility to the wellbeing of girls on the catwalk at fashion week, and in the industry as a whole.
Earlier this year, France adopted a crucial bill to criminalise the use of models that are excessively thin – those who do not follow the rules face sanctions ranging from a fines to prison time. Major fashion brands such as Christian Dior and Gucci has followed suit and barred skinny models from appearing in their collections. The momentum is growing and we, the undersigned, hereto ask the European Union to adopt a similar law that will be enforced in all member states.
We must put an end to the exploitation of vulnerable young girls who dream of becoming the world’s next supermodel. Thank you!
