Lift ban on women on stadiums in Iran!

In March 2019, a 29-year-old woman from Iran, Sahar Khodayari, geared up to see her favourite football team and headed over to Azadi Stadium in Tehran. Ironically, the name of the stadium means freedom in Persian, but Ms. Khodayari would have no part in that.

The preparations that this woman performed before the game included dressing herself as a man, because women in Iran are not allowed to attend sporting events and have been banned from all stadiums nationwide.

But her stunt failed miserably; she raised the attention of other men in the stadium and security was eventually called; she was removed from the stadium, taken to prison and trialed; she received a sentence of six months behind bars. It's absolutely insane, but this is precisely happened.

Since the Islamic Revolution took place in 1978, women have seen their basic rights severely restricted: for instance, they are not allowed to leave the country without the permission of a male relative; they are not allowed to file for divorce and cannot even choose their own clothing; but the regime took things a step further, and even restricted access to stadiums; supporters of the law argue that it would be highly inappropriate for women to hear men curse at these events - but this is obviously just a cover. We are no longer talking about ideology or religion, but rather humiliation.

The women of Iran deserve better, they have endured too much over the past 40 years, it's time to normalise relations in society!
